The Augustinian priory of St Denys was founded by Henry I around 1124 and was located two miles north of Southampton's north gate in Portswood on the approximate site of the modern St Denys' rail station (which is now well within the bounds of the city of Southampton). In 1535 the house had a prior and nine canons and the Valor Ecclesiasticus put the annual value of the priory's lands at only £32 15s, making it one of the smaller religious houses (Blake, Priory of St Denys, pp xliv–xlv; VCH: Hampshire, vol 2, pp 160, 163).
The prior's accounts from St Denys' record rents of the
priory's holdings and annual expenses, including external expenses of
horses for riding to London and Romsey and gifts to the servants of
various aristocrats. The accounts were rendered at Michaelmas.
