  • Endnote

The payments for wages on f 7 occur in a group of payments of wages to the clerk of the customs, the craneman, 'one who kept the clock,' and another for ringing the curfew. The three men here all given the same last name, 'Wayte,' are identified as the town minstrels in the previous year's accounts (Steward's Accounts, 1433–4, f 3v) and identified as Richard March, William Goldfynch, and John Goddislond. The use of the name 'Wayte' for all three indicates that they served as the town waits, a term otherwise never used in the records of Southampton, where they are always called 'minstrel' or 'musician.'

The payments for wages on f 9 occur in a list of quarterly wages for civic officers, of which the waits are the last three of eleven.
