mynstrells mynstrellsOn f 53v, the 'lord matrevers' who was given a supper by the town (at which his minstrels performed) was Thomas FitzAlan, lord Maltravers or Mautravers (1450–1524), the title given to the heir of the earl of Arundel. The earl at that time – William FitzAlan (1417–87), 21st earl of Arundel, had been assigned the fee farm of Southampton by the king, which the town paid in small instalments, sometimes in wine. The town may well have given this dinner for the earl's son in hopes of moderating the earl's demands for payment (VCH: Hampshire, vol 3, pp 490–524, British History Online , http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/hants/vol3/pp490-524 [accessed 3 December 2018]).

Book, pp iii–xlvi, for further discussion. Thick's edition
of the 1492–3 accounts includes full transcriptions of those documents,
including records relating to drama and minstrelsy.
