A '+' occurs to the right of all the entries on p 5, probably a mark indicating those items had been copied into the lost Book of Fines for this period, or perhaps that they had been entered into the audit accounts in the Book of Debts. No corresponding entries occur in the Book of Debts, so the payments to the players and tumblers must have been included in the lump sum for gifts and rewards by the auditors.
Payments on pp 14 and 18 are dated 7 October and 19 November respectively.
Record title: Mayor's Accounts
Repository: Southampton City Archives
Shelfmark: SC5/3/12
Repository location: Southampton
Titles on original covers identify these as the mayors' books of 'casualties': here
are fines and payments for a variety of civic expenses, as well as
accounts of poor relief, the last often taking up the largest part of
the book. These books, each covering a single accounting year from
Michaelmas to Michaelmas, appear to be rough accounts which were copied
into the Books of Fines at the end of each accounting year. Some have
their original parchment covers; others have replacement paper covers of
the late eighteenth century.
