  • Endnote

Perhaps this payment to players to leave town appears with the poor relief accounts, rather than with the regular payments where such payments normally appear, because the poor relief section also includes payments to poor people and soldiers and others travelling with passes and certificates, and occasionally payments to travellers lacking passes to send them away. The three columns of numbers represent pounds, shillings, and pence.

  • Document Description

    Record title: Mayor's Accounts
    Repository: Southampton City Archives
    Shelfmark: SC5/3/14
    Repository location: Southampton

Titles on original covers identify these as the mayors' books of 'casualties': here are fines and payments for a variety of civic expenses, as well as accounts of poor relief, the last often taking up the largest part of the book. These books, each covering a single accounting year from Michaelmas to Michaelmas, appear to be rough accounts which were copied into the Books of Fines at the end of each accounting year. Some have their original parchment covers, others have replacement paper covers of the late eighteenth century.

    1631–2; English; paper; iii + 8 + iii; 310mm x 198mm; modern pencil foliation; bound in black and red leather-covered boards, title on front: 'MAYOR'S | ACCOUNTS | 1631–2.'
