  • Endnote

Most of the plays named in the inventories appear in Henslowe's diary and have been noted from the Foakes edition and, where relevant, the Lost Plays Database, Roslyn L. Knutson, David McInnis, and Matthew Steggle (eds). For more details on each, see Appendix 3 and Wiggins and Richardson, British Drama, vols 2–4. Very few of those named survive. Wiggins and Richardson's titles have been followed for each in the textual notes.

Carson, Companion, pp 49–50, notes several puzzles presented by this document: 'Not the least of these is the identity of the author. The phrase "I have bought" sounds suspiciously like Henslowe, and if indeed he is the compiler of the list then the words probably mean no more than "have lent the actors to buy". The fact that one of the plays on the list Vayvode, belonged to Edward Alleyn in January 1599 raises the possibility that he may have been the "I" in question' (p 49). Carson further outlines other anomalies, such as omission on the list of playbooks of some plays known from the diary to have been staged or purchased in the same period. Gurr, Shakespeare's Opposites, p 103, favours Henslowe as the compiler of the list of plays owned by the company, but with the exclusion of those still owned by Alleyn.

John Pig (Pyg), the boy actor known to have been in the Lord Admiral's Men, 1597–9, was previously with Strange's Men (1593); see Gurr, Shakespeare's Opposites, pp 284–5, and Edwin Nungezer, A Dictionary of Actors and of Other Persons Associated with the Public Representation of Plays in England before 1642 (New Haven and London, 1929), 283. For William Slye (d. 1608), see Chambers, Elizabethan Stage, vol 2, pp 340–1; Greg, Dramatic Documents, vol 1, p 50; Gurr, Shakespeare Company, pp 241–2; and Nungezer, Dictionary of Actors, p 333. For shorter entries on both actors with further bibliographical references, see David Kathman, Biographical Index of English Drama before 1660.

  • Document Description

Record title: Lord Admiral's Men Inventories (A)
    Author: Malone
    Work title: 'Rise and Progress'

The original inventories were first discovered in 'a bundle of loose papers,' presumably at Dulwich College, by Edmond Malone, who published his transcription in 1790 ('Rise and Progress,' pp 289, 300–7), subsequently reprinted from Malone by various successors including Foakes, Henslowe's Diary, Appendix 2. The manuscript original has not yet surfaced so Malone's transcript has been used as the source here also. Others who have quoted Malone, notably Greg, Henslowe Papers, pp 113–23, have provided conjectural notes and identifications for props and titles included in the inventories; these are noted below only where some certainty exists. Malone glossed some words in square brackets embedded in the text; these are not included in this transcription.

A second inventory of theatrical apparel survives in the original, tentatively dated c 1601/2 and therefore related to the Admiral's Men at the Fortune playhouse; see the Henslowe-Alleyn Digitisation Project, MSS I, Article 30, and S.P. Cerasano's digital essay, 'An Inventory of Theatrical Apparel (c. 1601/2)' and Greg, Henslowe Papers, pp 52–5. The date given in the transcription here places the inventories into the period when the Admiral's Men were either resident at the Rose on Bankside or on the road in the provinces. They did not relocate to the new Fortune playhouse north of the Thames until 1600.

While comparing the details in the inventories with the loan accounts and the diary itself, Neil Carson has suggested that the inventories were only a partial list of the company's resources (Companion, pp 49–53). Although ownership is not expressed and the handwriting of the compiler cannot be examined, Carson deduces that by 'whomever compiled, however, the inventory is most probably (like the companion inventories of properties and costumes) a list belonging to the players' of the Admiral's company (Companion, p 49).

For abstracts of the document and details of its transcription history, see the related EMLoT event records here, here, here, and here.
